Anatomy for Beginners

In this episode, Dr Gunther Von Hagens (Institute for plastination) uses the body of a man who donated his corpse to science to educate others about the anatomy of the human body.

In this scene we can see that Von Hagens has removed the skin in one piece allowing us to see the bare structure of the body below.

“…although this may seem, and indeed is, a very strange sight [flayed skin], it has a very long history in art. One of the most famous examples of the skin being painted in this state can be found on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo has painted a portrait of himself as the flayed skin of St. Bartholomew.”
